Prayer   071899

Matthew 7:7-12

Prayer is asking and receiving. It is talking with God. It is making our requests known to Him who created us. There are two kinds of prayers. The kind that reaches God and the kind that doesn't. Jesus told the story of the Pharisee and the Publican to illustrate that fact. In the Gospel of Luke chapter 18, verses 10-14. For some religious people the story is quite surprising.

I. In Matthew 7 Jesus teaches us three aspects of Prayer.

A. Prayer is asking and receiving. 1 John 5:14-15
B. Prayer is seeking and finding.  Jeremiah 29:11-13
C. Prayer is knocking and opening. Matthew 17:14-21

II. There are many reasons why we should pray.

A. Prayer is a way to get things from God. James 4:2
B. Prayer unlocks the treasures of God's wisdom. James 1:5
C. Prayer gives us joy. John 16:24
D. Prayer is the path to power. Jeremiah 33:3
E. Sinners can be saved when they pray. Romans 10:13,14

III. There are many places to pray.

A. The disciples prayed in the upper room. Acts 1:13,14
B. They prayed as they went from house to house. Acts 2:42-47
C. They prayed in church (Acts 12:5) as well as in prison (Acts16:25)
D. We are to pray everywhere. 1 Timothy 2:8

When we pray we are agreeing that God is our source and guide. We are cooperating with Him in changing our world, enlarging the kingdom and bring men, women, boys and girls to Christ. We are able to do all things through Him who gives us strength and prayer taps that strength. We need to be a people of prayer because that is the true source of the power we need to be all that God has called us to be.

Prayer as a source of Assurance
080899

Luke 18:1-8

We know a great deal about Jesus. We know that, as Christians, we want very much to be like Him. Yet we feel that we fall far short of the kind of life Jesus lived and the confidence and power He expressed.

I. We know that Jesus acted with power and authority.
A. He taught with authority. Mark 1:21,22
B. He acted with authority. Mark 1:23-28
C. He knew the source of His authority. John 6:19, 30

II. We have the promise of power and authority.
A. Jesus assured the disciples. John 20:21, 22
B. Jesus promised this to all who believe. John 14:12
C. Yet, all too often, we do not 'feel' that power and authority.

III. The source of that power and authority is available to us.
A. Jesus always prayed in every situation.
1. When He chose the 12. Luke 6:12
2. Before He was transfigured. Luke 9:28
3. Before He faced death for us. Luke 22:41,42
B. The only teaching the disciples asked for. Luke 11:1
C. We are commanded to pray. Eph. 6:18-20; Col. 4:2-4; 1 Thess. 5:16-18; James 5:13-16; 1 Peter 4:7,8

If we will devote ourselves to even a fraction of the kind of prayer Jesus did we can expect the kind of power Jesus exercised to be released through us. We need to commit ourselves to that same kind of prayer life and seeking after God.

Filled with Holy Spirit
081599

Acts 10:25-48

Most teaching on the filling of the Spirit would begin with Acts 2, not Acts 10. However, it seems to me that Acts 10 is more to the point for us since it was the first occasion when non-Jews were filled with Holy Spirit. Since we are a part of the non-Jewish world it should be helpful to see what is going on when these Italians were filled.

I. Holy Spirit Filling had been promised.
A. By John the Baptist. Matthew 3:11
B. By Jesus. Acts 1:8
C. Many had experienced the filling.
1. John, from birth. Luke 1:15
2. Elizabeth on hearing Mary. Luke 1:41
3. Zacharias. Luke 1:67
4. Jesus on going into the wilderness. Luke 4:1

II. The Holy Spirit "fell" on Cornelius' household.
A. While Peter was speaking. (prior to the altar call!)
B. They spoke in tongues. (a language - heavenly or earthly)
1. Speaking to God. 1 Cor. 14:2
2. Praying in the Spirit, or, singing in the Spirit. 1 Cor. 14:15
C. They magnified (PRAISED) God.
III. We are commanded to be filled with Holy Spirit! Eph. 5:15-21
A. Praising with music and spiritual songs. (Example: Paul & Silas in jail: Acts 16:25)
B. Being thankful in all things. 2 Thess. 2:13
C. Being mutually submissive. Phil. 2:5-11

There is much less mystery concerning being filled with the Spirit in the Bible than there is in most teaching we hear today. God greatly desires to fill His people and to flow throught hem to change the world. Jesus promised it would be true. John 7:37-39 We must let the Spirit of God cleanse us, prepare us and then fill us. Then we will change the world we live in.

Holy Spirit and Prayer
082299

John 14:12-27

Jesus, in the last days of His earthly life, wanted His loved ones to know they would not be alone. He assured them of His ongoing concern for them and of His promise they would not be left alone. This promise is with us as well. All the promises of God belong to all the people of God. (Galatians 3:13-14)

I. Never Alone
A. Between His death and Pentecost He provided. John 20:21-22
B. He did not promise a 'different' comforter. John 14:16 (another of the same identical kind)
C. The Spirit is twice referred to as "the Spirit of Jesus"
Acts 16:7 & Philippians 1:19

II. Because I live you will live also.
A. Jesus is the LIFE. John 11:25 & 14:6
B. The Spirit gives LIFE. John 6:63 & Galatians 6:8
C. With LIFE comes confidence. Hebrews 4:16

III. The Helper will teach us ALL THINGS!
A. The Spirit shows what God has given us. 1 Cor. 2:12,13
B. We will be guided by Holy Spirit. John 16:12-15
C. Even when we do not have the words. Romans 8:26

New Christians (and often older ones) feel we do not know how to pray or what to say when it is time to pray. Not to worry! The Spirit of Truth has come to live in us and will guide us in all things. Trust the Spirit within and prayer will become as natural as breathing. Rest on Him not on our own understanding then we will be able to ask and receive because we ask what God already wants to give.

Wilderness? …or Land of Promise?
090599

Isaiah 35:1-10

Isaiah sees a time in which the wilderness blooms, the joy of the Lord fills the earth, the weak are helped and the fearful are strengthened. He is seeing spiritual truth unfolding. This was partly fulfilled in the life of Jesus on earth. It shall ultimately be fulfilled in the coming of the Lord and the Kingdom on earth. However, along the way we are able to enjoy moments of this full life God alone gives.

I. Being in the Wilderness as a Believer. 1 Corinthians 3:1-4
A. Babes in Christ. Hebrews 5:12,13
B. Still carnal. Romans 7:15-24
C. Acting like mere men. Galatians 5:17

II. God has a better intention for us. 1 Corinthians 2:9-16
A. The Spirit reveals what God has given. Romans 8:12-17
B. Jesus promised. John 15:15; 26,27
C. We have the Mind of Christ. Ephesians 4:20-24

III. While we await the Coming the Spirit and Kingdom live in us.
We do not have to wander in wilderness.
A. The Spirit has freed us. Romans 8:1-4
B. The Kingdom is in Us! Luke 17:20-21
C. We have entered in. We can live like it. 2 Corinthians 3:12-18

We do not have to live in the wilderness of this world. Holy Spirit has been poured out on those who have received Jesus as Lord and has enabled us to walk according the Spirit and not according to the flesh. We must believe this in the same manner we believed for our salvation. Having believed we need to walk in it. Praise God we can!

In Christ
091299

John 14:15-21

Much of what we teach and receive about our relationship to Jesus refers to Christ being in us. Yet most of the passages in the Bible refer to our being in Jesus. Yes, He is in us and without that we are not saved. But His coming into us causes us to be able to rejoice in being IN HIM and to enjoy the strength and protection that provides.

Imagine one of those little Russian dolls. The larger doll is opened and the next smaller is inside it. You can only see one at a time but all are inside the first. Well, we were in Jesus, in the Father. Jesus is in us. NOTHING can approach you without passing Him.

I. We were IN HIM before the world began. Ephesians 1:4
A. Chosen. 1 Peter 1:20
B. For a purpose. Ephesians 1:11-12
C. This does not rule out our choice. It confirms His foreknowledge.

II. When we celebrate the Lord's Supper we celebrate this truth.
A. The blood does represent Jesus providing salvation. 1 Peter 1:2
B. The body represents our being in Him and He being our LIFE. Romans 5:8-11
C. When He went to the cross we went with Him and died with Him. Romans 6:6-8

III. IN HIM we have all we need to live our daily lives.
A. He is our protection. 2 John 2
B. He is our wisdom and direction. 1 Corinthians 1:26-31
C. He is our inner life. Colossians 3:4

John tells us that eternal life is Jesus. When He comes into us we have eternal life. However, He knew who let Him in before He created the universe and He prepared for us all our lives before we were ever born. Nothing passes our way that He does not inspect and allow, or reject, according to our higher need. We too often live in our base needs but He never does. He allows us to walk through the deep waters of life because He walks with us. We never walk alone.

What Kind of Hospital?
092699

Galatians 6:1-10

The idea of the church being a hospital for sinners is a sound one. However to too many of us the concept is flawed. A hospital is a facility which is usually ran by experts and specialists for the care of patients who are largely passive in their treatment. The church often has been morphed into just that kind of institution. However it is a hospital which often wants its patients to be treated outside the facility and then brought in when their illness is socially acceptable. Those that do bring in the ill for treatment still leave the care to paid professionals. Is this what God had in mind when He established the church?

I. The Scriptures are filled with admonitions to serve others.
A. Jesus set the example for us Matthew 20:25-28
B. Jesus taught us to follow His example. John 20:21
C. We are to serve especially the weak. Romans 15:1, 2

II. The power of God is given, not for our good, but for others.
A. Spiritual gifts came for others. 1 Peter 4:7-11
B. We are to seek ways to build one another up. Hebrews 10:24, 25
C. We are, in fact, to let ONE ANOTHER be our theme.

1. Be devoted to one another in brotherly love.
Honor one another above yourselves. Romans 12:10
2. Live in harmony with one another. Romans 12:16
3. Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Romans 14:13
4. Accept one another.... Romans 15:7
5. ... instruct one another. Romans 15:14
6. Greet one another with a holy kiss. Romans 16:16
7. ... agree with one another... 1 Corinthians 1:10
8. ... serve one another in love. Galatians 5:13
9. ... bearing with one another in love. Ephesians 4:2
10. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other... Ephesians 4:32
11. Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. Ephesians 5:21
12. ... teach and admonish one another... Colossians 3:16
13. ... encourage one another and build each other up, 1 Thessalonians 5:11
14. ... encourage one another daily, Hebrews 3:12-13
15. ... love one another deeply, from the heart. 1 Peter 1:22
16. ... live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble. 1 Peter 3:8
17. Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. 1 Peter 4:9

III. Our best care comes from each other.
A. We are the people of God, empowered by Him. 1 Peter 2:9,10
B. We have God's wisdom available to us. 1 Corinthians 1:30,31
C. We must reclaim the role God has given us in serving others.

The world around us has accepted the idea that the church is not a place of care, concern and support. In order to have these things we turn to organizations and individuals outside the body of Christ. This should not be so.

God's Intent
100399

Isaiah 48:17-19

Our lives go along from day to day with too little rejoicing and confidence that we are blessed by God. Many know they are saved but do not 'feel' the presence of God. What's up? Why do we fall short of our own intentions and purposes. Why do we fall short of God's intentions and purposes for our lives?

I. God proclaims He is to be our Instructor.
A. Our Redeemer. Job 19:25-27
B. Our Teacher. John 13:13, 14
C. Our Leader. Psalm 32:8-10

II. If we had just listened!
A. Had we heard the commandments. Psalm 119:9-11; John 14:21;15:10
B. We would have had peace. Philippians 4:4-7
C. Our righteousness would have risen. Psalm 37:3-6

III. The result would be many descendants.
A. When we let God control He gives new believers. Acts 2:41
B. When we live His way He adds more. Acts 2:42-47
C. Grown Sheep bear lambs.

We grow up to the Lord and He naturally gives us offspring.

God's intention is not to slam His people or to put them down but to build them up. Yet He cannot work in our lives as He wishes because we have not met His conditions. This is a process we need to enter into. The lord's Supper is a good place to begin. We must examine ourselves. We must determine to repent and return and He is ever ready to bless and restore. What we have never had He will give. Even what we have lost will be returned! Joel 2:25

Our God is Different!
100399

Psalm 86:8-15

We seem to forget that God is directing our lives. We often act in our own strength and ability and give God the credit. We act as though God is like the world around but He is not. He is not only greater. His will and way are different from that of the world. Like Moses, we must know God's way. Exodus 33:12-15

I. There is no other 'god' like Him.
A. He delivered Israel from slavery Exodus: 15:11-13
B. There is no other GOD. Isaiah 45:14-21
C. He delivers His people. Daniel 3:28, 29; 6:26, 27

II. We must learn His way, not just His will!
A. This must be our heart's cry. Psalm 143:7-10
B. God is eager to teach us. Psalm 25:8-14
C. The God who saved us will equip us in His way. Hebrews 13:20, 21

III. He is the God who cares (for us and all the world)
A. He cares for His enemies. Romans 5:8
B. He came in Jesus to meet our needs. John 1:14-18; 3:16
C. He cares so much He will not leave us. John 14:18; Matt 28:20

The God who cares for us enough to die for us will givee us knowledge of His way as well as His will. He will not call us to an activity without showing us how to do it. In our church, in our community, in our families, in our personal lives, He will show us His will and then He will show us His way. We must wait on both parts of His plan and then we will have His kind of success. It may not look to the world like success but it will to God and that is what counts.

The "Gray Areas of Life"
101799

Roman 6:1-18

We profess to admire the "saints" and we equally are repulsed by the "sinners" around. Yet, most of the time, most us live as though there is a "gray area" within which we are not quite "sinning" but maybe not quite "righteous". We are taught to think this way by the world around us. This way of thinking leads us into powerlessness and uselessness in the kingdom of God. We do have a desire to be useful and to be effective in the kingdom but many of us have given up on any real hope of it happening.

I. There is a great hope for righteous living in Scripture.
A. The new birth is preceded by death to who and what we were. Galatians 2:19-20
B. Having died with Christ we can now live with Him. 1 Peter 2:24
C. We have a new way of living. 2 Corinthians 5:17

II. We can choose to live the Christian life. That choice will not be made for us.
A. We must agree with God that we are "dead to sin". Ephesians 4:22
B. We must also agree with God that we are "alive" to Him in Christ Jesus Ephesians 4:23, 24
C. The promise of the word is "sin shall not have dominion" Galatians 5:18-25

III. Whatever we choose, we ARE God's children, if we are in Christ Jesus. Not if we live like it.
A. We have been saved by grace. Ephesians 2:8, 9
B. We have a new level of life. Ephesians 2:10
C. We have a new source of "ability". Philippians 4:13

We have the ability, through the power of Holy Spirit within us, to live out the Christian life. We may not feel like it but we do have it. We often do not act like it but we have it. We literally "can do all things" through Christ". We must focus our minds carefully obeying and living out the life that God has put in.

The "Simplicity of Life"
103199

John 10:1-18

Jesus spoke to His disciples of His relationship to them in very simple terms. Here, He presents Himself as "The Good Sheperd". Thus implying their responsibility is to simply be sheep. He enlarges the illustration as it becomes obvious they do not understand. He is the "Door"; He is the way to the Father and He makes Himself know to His sheep. They both know Him and can follow Him. He lays down His life to give His sheep abundant life. Yet most Christians seem to be on a quest for the very thing Jesus said He has already given.

I. We seek life apart from Christ.
A. We get caught up in our new systems. Galatians 3:1-3
B. Even in the scriptures we may not find what we seek. John 5:39,40
C. We do not naturally turn to God's way. Isaiah 53:6

II. God's way is not our way.  Proverbs 3:3-12
A. Not on our own understanding. vv 5,6
B. Not in our own wisdom. vv. 7,8
C. Not in our own riches. vv. 9,10

III. God's way -- not the world's way -- in all things.
A. It is so easy to fall into the trap of turning to the world. Psalm 20:7
B. But the world's way is not our way. James 4:4-10
C. We can live daily in God's way. Galatians 5:16, 25

Living by the Spirit excludes living by the rules of the world. The Christian church has indeed been bewitched. We have turned to the world's way of dealing with most matters in life and we, as a group, have become progressively unhappy and incomplete. We cannot live by the flesh and be filled with God's blessing at the same time. We must return and repent. He will gladly gather us and walk with us.

A Heart Prepared for God
110799

I Samuel 16:1-13

From earliest times the Bible speaks of the heart as of greatest significance in our relationship to God. As we come to the communion table we are reminded that the Apostle instructed us to examine ourselves before we partake. To do that let's look at what scripture tells us about our hearts.

I. We are to set our heart to follow God.
A. We must have a guide for our heart. Psalm 119:30, 112
B. Evil comes from not setting our hearts to follow God. 2 Chronicles. 12:14
C. In fact, a curse comes on those who do not. Malachi 2:2

II. We must have a clean heart.
A. The one who can approach God. Psalm 24:3-6
B. An effort must be made on our part. Philippines 4:8
C. Done by the Spirit. Galatians 5:22-26

III. We must not harden our hearts. Hebrews 3:8
A. A hard heart breaks communion with God.
B. A hard heart damages us spiritually.
C. A hard heart cause us to hurt others.

IV. We must guard our hearts and allow it to be guarded.
A. Our heart is the depository of our life. Proverbs 4:23
B. God is prepared to guard our life. Philippines 4:4-7
C. We must simply cooperate with Him.

We need to examine ourselves and allow God to do His work in us. David saw his need after a time of great sin in his life when he cried out to God. In Psalm 51:7-12 he recognized that the cleansing comes from God alone. We cannot cleanse ourselves but God can. As we approach the Lord's Table we need to allow Him to do His work in our lives. 1 John 1:8-10

Loving and Serving God
111499

Deuteronomy 11:8-25

We live in an age when loving is related to sex and serving is something related to an underclass. Love is an act of our will which is carried out by many small and seemingly insignificant acts. Serving as a part of that process of loving. We have been called to follow the example of our Lord who served others in every way. We are to be like our Master. If so, that will require us to be faithful in loving and serving God. To do that we will love and serve people. This will result in feelings of love.

I. To love the Lord is our basic command. Deut. 6:4-9
A. By keeping His words in our hearts. Ps. 119:11
B. By making His word part of our family life. Ps. 112.1-8 (Susanna Wesley)
C. By making His word part of our very home.

II. What does God ask us? Deut. 10:12
A. To fear the Lord our God. (reverential awe) Acts 2:43
B. To walk in God's ways. Hosea 14:9
C. To serve Him with all our heart and soul. Mark 12:28-31

III. God will do the work to prepare us to love Him. Deut. 30:6
A. He will cleanse our hearts. Hebrews 10:21, 22
B. He will enable us and our children to love Him. 1 Thess. 5:23, 24
C. This will enable us to live. John 10:10

We love God in our everyday life by reading His word, praying and then putting into action what we have heard and said. We can reflect fully the power of God by allowing Him to flow through us. He will gladly do this as we respond to Him in love and service. It is a joyous thing the love and serve God.

How Can We Live?
112199

Ezekiel 33:10, 11

Ezekiel is probably most remembered for his vision of a wheel within a wheel that is often touted as an example of a UFO. Or, he is remembered as the prophet who saw the Vally of Dry Bones come to life again. Well he had much more than that to tell us. This passage raises the question that we all should face. Now the thrust of it is not "should we live this way or that way" it is "if this is the nature of our relationship to God, how can we live?" This question cannot be fully answered under the law. It must await an Age of Grace. Now the grace of God has always been the way people came to Him but it was not nearly so clear before Jesus.

I. Job struggled with this and began the answer. Job 9:2
A. He could see that God was too 'different' for him. Job 9:32, 33
B. He knew there was a way. Job 16:19-21
C. He finally abandoned sight and trusted God. Job 19: 25-27

II. Jesus came to fully answer the question of "how". Gal. 3:10-14
A. All the law could do was show man his wrong. v.10
B. Christ became a curse for us to free us. 1 Peter 2:24
C. He did this that all the blessings could come to us. v. 14

III. We Can Live by Faith! Gal. 2:20
A. We cannot live in our own strength. 2 Cor. 5:7
B. We can live by faith. 2 Cor. 5:14-17
C. We do have enough faith. Rom. 12:3; Eph. 4:7

When we look at the lives we live in the light of the word of God we might dispair. However when we look at the life Jesus lives in us we know he can do all we need done (1 Thes. 5:23, 24). Praise God, we can live by faith because "He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ. Phil 1:6b

Communion
120599

Exodus 12: 1-11

Passover is the Feast out of which our Lord's Supper, or Communion, grew. Jesus met with His disciples at the Passover Feast prior to being arrested. He made some changes in the order of the Passover. He took the hidden bread and the fourth cup and said, "This is My Body", and "This is My Blood". We are to "do this in remembrance of" Jesus.

I. "Communion" appears in the King James Bible 3 times. (this is the source of our use of the word for the Lord's Supper.)
A. 1 Cor. 10:16 where the word means "participation".
B. 2 Cor. 6:14 where the word means "fellowship".
C. 2 Cor. 13:14 where the word means "fellowship".

II. "Participation"
A. We were born in participation with Adamic sin. Rom. 5:12
B. We participated in Christ's death on the cross. 1 Peter 2:24; Gal. 6:14
C. We participated in Christ's resurrection and ascension. Eph. 2:5, 6; Col. 3:1-4

III. We "Fellowship" with Christ and other believers.
A. The Word of God is our guide. 1 John 1:3, 4
B. Fellowship is broken by sin. 1 John 1:6, 7
C. Fellowship is restored by agreeing with God. 1 John 1:8, 9

When we come to Communion we come to Christ and to the fellowship of believers. When that fellowship is broken restoration is guaranteed if we will come to Him. We do not have to wonder if He will forgive. He already has! We need to confess for our own information. We need to know we are forgiven.

Mary learns of Jesus
121299

Luke 1:26-38

Mary was a young woman, a virgin, who had an opportunity to serve God. Not to become God, or even the mother of God, but to become the mother of Jesus. Now, we know, Jesus is God but Mary was the mother of the human part of Jesus. His spirit came directly from God. She had to be prepared to follow in obedience in every way. She had to face the task of bearing the Messiah and of living with the consequences. How could she bear such a great responsibility?

I. Mary was prepared in advance
A. She was descended from David the King. (genealogies)
B. She had a heart to please God. She was highly favored.
C. She was willing to obey without knowing the outcome.

II. She knew WHAT He would be if not exactly "Who".
A. He would be great - the Son of God. Luke 22:67-70
B. He would sit on the throne of David. Isaiah 16:5
C. He would have an eternal kingdom. Dan. 4:2, 3; 1 Pet. 1:10, 11

III. We celebrate Christmas with many of the same limitations.
A. We know more but still must walk in faith. Rom. 1:16, 17
B. We must trust based on past proof but without future knowledge.
C. We live in a faith relationship that will result in future sight.

Enjoy Christmas! If you must, learn like Dicken's "Scrooge" how to keep Christmas well. It is a time of giving and rejoicing. It should focus on the greatest gift of all. The Son of God who gave His life that we may live. We should live our lives in order to please and honor Him.

Joseph
121999

Matthew 1:18-25

Joseph faced some very hard choices as he considered what he had to do. He had to believe the angel of God who had confirmed for him what to do. He had to go against the tradition of his people in taking an already pregnant girl as his wife. He had to face a future raising a child beyond his understanding. More than the rest of us have had to handle was handed to Joseph. He bore it with grace and honor.

I. She was found to be with Child of the Holy Spirit.
A. They were betrothed but not married. (still binding)
B. This had been promised. Isa. 7:14
C. This Child received His Life Spirit from God.

II. Joseph was a just (upright or honorable) man.
A. This puts him in good company.
1. Noah. Genesis 6:9
2. John the Baptizer. Mark 6:20
3. Lot. 2 Peter 2:7
B. The one the Lord delivers. Psalm 34:19; Prov. 11:8
C. One who attains life. Pro. 12:10

III. Joseph was obedient to God.
A. A character trait that is earned not inherited.
B. The greatest sign of faith. Genesis 15:6
C. The Name proved his obedience.

Joseph, faced with embarrassment and contempt, took Mary and, when the Child was born, called Him "The Savior". You see, "Jesus" is the English rendering of a Greek word that translates a Hebrew word that means "Yahweh is Salvation". This Name is a name above every name. "That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;" Philippians 2:10

Galatians 4:4-7

We know nothing about the early years of Jesus' life except that He "grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men." There are fantastic, false, stories about the boy but nothing we can count on. The Bible moves from His birth to His presentation to His ministry with no details to fill the void our curiosity supplies. In fact, two of the four gospels simply begin with Jesus' ministry. Yet Matthew and Luke place importance on Jesus' growing up years.

I. We know He was "born under the law"
A. Circumcised the eighth day. Lev. 12:1-8
B. Brought up under the Law. Deut. 4:9, 10 & 11:18-21
C. Obedient as a man (though He was God) Phil 2:5-11

II. Born to Redeem
A. Those under the Law. John 8:27-32
B. The outsiders. Romans 1:16, 17
C. All people everywhere. John 17:1-3

III. Born to bring the redeemed to a sense of sonship
A. We are born separated from God. 1 Cor 15:22
B. We are given the right to become God's children. John 1:12, 13
C. To be able to cry out to our Father for protection and support. Romans 8:12-17

Jesus probably lived a very normal childhood. He had siblings in His family and was the older brother. The family was very Jewish and probably very strict in discipline. There must have been much of the conflict we encounter in our families. We do know his brothers did not believe He was Messiah until after His crucifixion and resurrection. His brother, James, became the leader of The Way in Jerusalem very early and wrote the book of James in the NT. Jesus' influence must have been strong in James' life as well as in that of His other brothers and sisters. (Mat. 13:55, 56)
