A New Beginning
001231 Genesis 3
How often should we make a new beginning in our lives? There is no easy answer to that question. Some people are so unsettled they never actually got on with
the last several beginnings and are still trying a 'new' beginning. Some people are so afraid of the future they cannot consider a new beginning. As we think of the new year and the new century we need to seriously
consider beginning anew in many areas of our life. This is a very good time to consider who we are and where we are at in our development. The we can make commitments to a new beginning.
I. Adam and Eve had the best possible relationship with God. A. God talked to them with an audible voice. Gen. 1:29, 30 B. God gave them the very best of material things. C. They understood God's will in their lives.
II. When tempted to bypass God's plan they jumped. A. This act resulted in spiritual death. Romans 5:12-14 B.
This was passed on to all of us. Romans 5:18, 19 C. Their relationship with God was restored with blood. Gen. 3:21
III. They began again with consequences. A. The ultimate consequence is covered. Rom. 5:8 B. Yet the temporal consequences remain. (We abuse our bodies - health loss; gossip - lack of trust, etc) C. Yet God is ready to give us a renewed relationship with Him. 1 John 1:5-2:2
We need to remember that God is always ready to give a renewed relationship to any who asks. He is not willing that any should perish but that all come to
repentance. Let's repent of all the small and large things in our lives and restore our relationship with God and with each other for the new year.
The Gift That Keeps on Giving 001224
John 4:1-14
"The gift that keeps on giving" is a popular advertising slogan used by fruit of the month clubs and other businesses which will repeat the gift for a limited period of time.
Well God gave the gift that never stops. He gave His Son! Jesus' statement to the woman at the well needs to be heard by the world. "If you knew the gift of God" could easily be one of the best
introductions to the gospel.
I. We give gifts for a variety of reasons. A. A bribe. B. Out of a desire to please another person. C. Or, because we do love them.
II. God gives His gifts out of grace. (God's Riches At Christ's Expense) A. Because of His freeheartedness. B. Because of our need and lack of ability. C. With no self-centered motives
III. God's greatest Gift is Jesus Himself. A. We could not have known our need. Romans 5:8 B. He sought us rather than we seeking Him. Gen. 3 C. He gave because of our need. 2 Tim. 1:8-12
IV. God's Gift keeps on giving. A. It is eternal. John 10:27, 28 B. It is unconditional. Romans 5:15 C. It is for all. John 3:17; 2 Peter 3:9
As we celebrate the great gift of God at Bethlehem we
need heart's of compassion on those who have not yet known that Gift. We need to join Christ in His search for the lost of this world and allow them to know His salvation.
God Sent His Son to Save us From our Sins 001217
Matthew 1:18-25
As we exchange gifts and share in the many feelings of this special time of year we need to settle in our minds that Jesus came to save us from our sins. That
was first affirmed to Joseph in the troubled time after he knew that Mary was already carrying a child that was not his! This was affirmed by no less than an archangel of God. This was announced to strengthen us to
allow God to reach down to us in salvation. Now how will we respond?
I. He was to be called "Jesus" because of His task. A. He shall save.... 1. Affirmed by angels. Luke 2:11
2. Affirmed by John the Baptist. John 1:29 3. Affirmed by His disciples. Acts 4:12 B. His people. John 1:11; Rom. 11:1-2; Rev. 21:3 C. From their sins. Acts 13:38, 39
II. What must we do to respond? A. Know that we are all born in need of Him. Rom. 3:23; Gal 3:22
B. Know that He was God's gift to us. Rom. 6:23; 1 John 2:1, 2 C. Accept Him as Lord. Rom. 10:9-13; Acts 16:30, 31
III. How will we respond? A. We need to seek things above. Col. 3:1-3 B. We need to practice the noble and pure. Phil 4:8, 9
C. We need to go and tell. Mark 5:19, 20
Yes, Christmas is a time of giving and receiving. It is also a time of sadness and concern for many people. Mostly it is a time when the whole world considers
the fact that the Son of God has come into the world to give life to all who will believe on Him. We need to share with those around us what we have experienced and let them know that He is their savior too. They
need to accept the greatest gift of all-Jesus Himself.
God Sent His Son to Give Us Life 001210
John 1:1-18
I don't know about you but this Christmas season seems to be rushing past. Next Sunday our music program will present the Christmas performance. The next
Sunday will be Christmas Eve. We have only begun to look at why Jesus came into the world. In fact this theme is so large I suppose there will never be enough Sundays in a year to tell all about our Lord and why He
came into the world. Today we are looking at part of the Life He came to give, Life that is indeed the Light of men.
I. Life that is eternal. John 3:14-16 A. Life that is derived from His life. 1 John 5:11-13 B. Life that is truly eternal. Hebrews 13:8
C. Life we must come to Him for. John 5:36-40
II. Life that is abundant. John 10:8-10 A. Always has been God's intent. Deut 28:1-6 B. This life is found in the Word. James 1:19-25
C. This life is found in His Name. John 21:31
III. Life that is reproduced. John 15:5-8 A. The life we have is His. Luke 19:10 B. Life will show itself if at all possible. (trees in bud); (roots in
rock); (fish in mud) C. We are to fulfill His command. Matt. 28:18-20
Jesus came into this world to bring God's life to God's people. This is not just as a gift to take to heaven when we die. We are intended to receive it and
then share it. There is no better time of year than Christmas and Easter to share Jesus with our friends and family. Right now the world is thinking about Jesus and His coming into the world. We need to give them
the greatest gift of all - an opportunity to share in that life!
God Sent Forth His Son 112600
Galatians 3:27-4:7
Commercial interests across our nation have long since begun to proclaim the Christmas season (for selfish reasons). With the passing of Thanksgiving we
can now begin to think on the coming of Christ into the world. No, He was not likely born in December. However, since we do not know when He was born it is good to take time to reflect on His coming and the purpose
of that coming. He came into the world to give all who will believe life, a life that is full and rich. For that we can celebrate in the coming weeks.
I. In the fullness of time. A. A ransom given for us. 1 Tim. 2:5, 6 B. Proclaiming the Truth. Mark 1:14, 15 C. With a specific purpose. Luke 19:10
II. God Sent His Son. (not a committee) A. After speaking through the years. Heb. 1:1-3 B. To become like us - to redeem us. Heb. 2:14
C. To destroy the work of the enemy. 1 John 3:4-8
III. That we Might Receive the Full Rights of Sons. A. We, who trust in Christ, are sons of God. Rom. 8:12-14
B. Not slaves, children of God. Rom. 8:15, 16 C. Joint heirs with Jesus. Rom. 8: 17-21
Christmas should always remind us of God's purpose in sending His Son. When we think about His purpose for us we should then be able to rejoice in that
purpose. Christmas should, first and last, be a time of joy-filled celebration of our relationship to Jesus. Too bad we let it get twisted into a spending spree which we pay too much for and so dishonor God. Let's
determine that this Christmas we will focus on the really reason for celebration and let the world around us know that there is a Living God and Jesus is Lord of our lives
Thanksgiving as a Christian Tradition 111900
Psalm 107
We come to this holiday, as a community and as a nation, with very little Christian conviction. For too many people Thanksgiving has become "Turkey
Day". Well, for Americans there is a strong tradition of proclaiming a day of Thanksgiving. Beginning with the Pilgrim colonists who survived the winter of 1620 and continuing through George Washington who
proclaimed a national day of Thanksgiving to Almighty God in 1789 there has always been a tradition of expression of thanks to God by our nation. A lady named Sarah Josepha Hale spent 40 years writing editorials and
championing the concept of a fixed day of Thanksgiving which was honored by Abraham Lincoln in 1863 fixing the last Thursday in November as a national day of Thanksgiving. Every president since have continued the
tradition which we now observe. How should Christians respond to this day of Thanksgiving?
I. In Psalm 107 We see a Basis of Thanksgiving. A. Israel had a great need and God met it. vv 1-15
B. God has delivered many who are in trouble. vv. 15-22 C. God goes where we are to deliver us. vv. 23-43
II. The Bible Gives Many Examples of Personal Thanksgiving. A. We should Thank God for His Righteousness. Ps. 7:17
B. We should Thank God for His Goodness to us. Ps. 116:12-17 C. We should Thank God for His Salvation. Psalm 118:19-29
III. Christians Have Many Reasons for Thanksgiving. A. That we have been set free from sin. Romans 6:15-18
B. That He always leads us in triumph. Col. 2:14 C. That our Growth in the Lord Enables us to Overflow with Thanksgiving. Col 2:6,7
We need to make Thanksgiving our daily discipline. We need to thank God in all things and for all things. We need to be a people who are known for our
thankful hearts. We have so much and we have been blessed so much Thanksgiving should be our everyday lifestyle. So much of scripture asserts we are to act "with thanksgiving". Our very lives should be an
assertion of thanks to God.
Approaching God in Prayer 111200
Philippians 4:4-8
Last week we looked at the purpose of prayer. We must pray for the Lord of the harvest to send laborers into His harvest. We must pray in such a way that our world is changed. And yet,
if our prayers are to be heard, we must approach God in such a way we know He hears us. The Bible tells us: This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears
us. And if we know that He hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of Him. (1 John 5:14-15) This is a powerful statement and one which might turn us from prayer if we allow the enemy of our souls
to convince us we cannot ask according the His will. We can ask according to His will by following the scripture. I want to look at this one passage and see what we can do to KNOW we are being heard of God.
I. We are to rejoice in gentleness. A. In the Old Testament they were taught to rejoice. B. The Psalms taught them to sing in rejoicing. Psalm 34:1-3 C. Even rejoice in troubles. Luke 6:22, 23; James 1:2-4
II. We are to choose not to be anxious. (Feelings follow our will) A. Jesus taught us not to worry. Matt. 6:25-34 B. We can encourage others. Prov. 12:25
C. God will lead us out of anxiety. Psalm 139:23, 24
III. We are to simply and surely make our requests to God. A. By prayer. Eph. 6:18 B. By supplication. (Grows out of great need.) James 5:16
C. With thanksgiving. Eph. 5:18-21; Col. 3:12-17
We are taught in the word that our prayers are to grow out of our attitude coupled to our need. There is no question that men and women of prayer have changed
the world they live in. The process is ongoing and one we desire to be a part of our lives. We must rise to the occasion and, having put our faith in Jesus, pray in such a way He will fill our world and change our
lives for His glory.
A Purpose in Prayer 110500
1 Timothy 2:1-7
Too often, if we pray - and when we pray, we pray a generic sort of prayer which sort of covers everything and nothing at the same time. For many of us prayer
is something only done in public and when called upon. Paul saw a need to encourage Timothy in the matter of prayer. In the same way the only thing the disciples ever asked Jesus to teach them was to pray. There is
a power in prayer that will defeat the enemy and change our lives in a manner we really desire. We need to learn to pray in specifics rather than generalities - to pray retail rather than wholesale.
I. To Pray for Everyone. A. First for ourselves. Otherwise, how can we bear other's burdens? B. For those in authority - and what better time as we face
elections? Rom. 13:1-7 C. That we might live peaceful and godly lives. (not necessarily prosperous)
II. That They Might Come to the Knowledge of the Truth. A. We need to build relationships. 1 Cor. 9:22 B. We need opportunities to witness. Col. 4:3
C. We need boldness to witness. Acts 4:29
III. That God Will set Them Free. A. That their eyes will be opened. 2 Cor. 4:3, 4 B. That we will be wise in speech and God will set them free. 2 Tim.
2:23-26 C. They cannot come unless God moves them. John 6:44 1. God must give them eyes to see. Mat. 13:15 2. God must give them faith to believe. Eph. 2:8, 9
3. God must give them the will to respond. Rom. 10:8-10
We are surrounded with a large number of people who have never heard and understood. They need us to really enter into prayer that they may be saved. We need
to pray that our lives will be salt and light to them. We need to pray that Holy Spirit will move on their behalf to help them see and to call them to Himself. We need to pray that the Lord of the Harvest will send
out workers to bring them in and then be willing to be those workers.
What are we in God's Eyes? 101500
Matthew 5:13
Last Sunday we looked at Jesus' clear statement that we are the salt of the earth. There are a number of other things Jesus said we are during His ministry.
He said these things to His disciples yet all these are passed on to us through them. A few of these statements are conditional. In other words we are only those things if we meet the conditions. However many of
them are things clearly showing we are seen in God's eyes as special people unconditionally. Let's look at the conditionals first then the unconditionals. Last, what does this mean in our lives.
I. What are the conditions for us to meet? A. Jesus said we are really His disciples, IF! John 8:31, 32 B. Jesus said we are branches of His vine
bearing much fruit, IF! John 15:5 C. Jesus said we are His friends, IF! John 15:14
II. What is promised unconditionally? A. We are important to Him! Luke 12:4-7; 22-26 B. We are "in Him". John 14:19, 20
C. We are witnesses to these things. Luke 24:48
III. How are we then to live? A. God, in Christ, has promised to take care of us. We should trust Him. B. God, in Christ, has opened His heart to reward
us abundantly. We should not fall short. C. God, in Christ, has called us to share His ministry. We should be open with others about Him.
We have a wonderful opportunity to have the Spirit of God flow through us in powerful ministry. We miss this because we do not see ourselves the way God does.
He has called us into a ministry of power and has promised to be with us in every way. We will never be left as orphans. We are always on His mind and in His heart and hands. Let us live like it.
Who is the light of the World? 100800
Matthew 5: 1-16
Jesus came to the Sermon on the Mount fairly early in His ministry. In some ways it is a statement of His call to His people and a summary of the primary
teaching of the kingdom. The Beatitudes, or blessings, in the first 12 verses have often been used as a basis of teaching. I feel led strongly to the opening statement following these blessings. You are the salt of
the earth . . . You are the light of the world. These words, spoken to His disciples, ring down to us today. A promise and a responsibility lie in them for all who call on the name of Jesus.
I. The Prophets had spoken of God/Jesus as LIGHT! Isa. 9:1-2 A. David saw God as his light. 2 Sam. 22:26-30
B. God is described as wrapping Himself in light. Ps. 104:1-4 C. In the end He will be our Light. Rev. 21:23, 24
II. The gospels show us His Light. A. Simeon saw He was the Light. Luke 2:28-32 B. John's gospel tells us He is Light! John 1:1-5
C. Jesus called Himself the Light of the world. John 8:12
III. Yet He says WE are the light of the world! A. We have be transferred to the kingdom of Light. Eph. 5:8-14; Col 1:10-14
B. We have become Light. 1 Thess. 5:5 C. We are light for a purpose. Mat. 5:16; 1 Peter 2:9; 1 John 1:7
You may be the only light that some people will ever be able to see. There are others around them who walk in the light but they can't see it because they do
not know them well. You they know and we must follow Jesus command to be light in the darkness of our world. We are light and we were not intended to be hidden under a basket. We are intended to be set on a high
place in our world and shine as light to all the world. We are to literally become lighthouses in our world to guide those lost in the storms of life into safe harbor in Jesus.
Always Ready to Give an Account 090300
The majority of Christians never consciously confront someone with the gospel and then hear that person pray to receive Christ as Lord. At the same time the
majority of Christians, perhaps secretly, desire to see that happen. Perhaps one of the problems is we never intentionally prepare for such a witness nor arrange matters so that we have opportunity. We rely on the
Holy Spirit to bring someone around and that seldom happens. What can we do to better give a defense of the gospel?
I. Sanctify Christ as Lord in our hearts. A. That is the essence of our salvation. Acts 16:31; Rom. 10:9, 10
B. That is the power of our transformation. I Cor. 6:9-11 C. That is the source of our life. I Thess. 4:1-8
II. The Bible gives us examples of natural witness. A. The jailer's family. Acts 16:25-33 B. In Timothy's family. 2 Tim. 1:5
C. In Paul's work. Acts 18:1-3
III. How can we have this same witness? A. Be wise in relation to outsiders. Col 4:5,6 B. Keep close to the Holy Spirit. Eph. 5:15-21
C. Abide in the Lord Jesus. John 15:4,5
It is possible, and even perhaps desirable, that we study techniques of witness. It may be good to learn "plans of Salvation" and series of
scripture so we may be better prepared to bear witness. However none of that will make us an effective witness without a close, abiding relationship to the living God. As we walk with Him He will draw us together
with others who need to know Him. These may be surprising and even unexpected but they will be responsive because He will bear His fruit through us. Praise His Holy Name.
The Promises of God 082700
2 Corinthians 1:18-22
Promises are a difficult thing for us to deal with. Those who are parents know how painful it is to a child when he, or she, believes a promise has been
broken. Yet often it is simply a matter of the conditions of the promise which has changed. "If I get the bonus..." means the promise depends on that extra money coming in. "If I can get off that
week..." . On and on conditions affect promises. Humanly we are not in control of many of the promises we make. In marriage too many, today, promise "as long as we both shall love" and feelings affect
the keeping of the promise. Well, gratefully, God is not like that and never will be.
I. God's Promises Rest on His completed act. Romans 15:8 A. Christ took our curse to return God's promises. Gal. 3:13, 14
B. The promises given Abraham and his "seed". Gal. 3:16 C. All the rules of the law only point us to Christ. Gal. 3:24
II. There is One Condition to Receiving the Promises. Gal. 3:29 A. Coming to Christ changes our allegiance. Col. 1:9-14
B. Coming to Christ changes our family. Rom. 5:17 C. Coming to Christ changes our confidence. Heb. 9:14, 15
III. The Promises Rest on His Completed Action. 2 Peter 1:3, 4 A. We must make every effort to add to our faith. 2 Peter1:5-9
B. We can rest in our ability to do this. Gal. 5:22, 23 C. If we fail He does not. 2 Timothy 2:11-13
None of this is to say we have no responsibility to God and our fellow man.
Of course we do! All people recognize this common obligation to a 'good' life. We must remember that the 'good life' is not enough. One must place their faith
if the living Lord, Jesus Christ. No amount of goodness will give us a better standing with God. However, once we have that standing it is virtually impossible to break our relationship to God. Just as a child does
not change family ties by rebellion because it is by birth so a child of God does not lose relationship by sin -- just fellowship. God is faithful. He will do the work to assure our life in Him. We ought to live as
those who are His by faith.
Our Part in Assurance 082000
Colossians 3:12-17
The Apostle Paul in writing to his beloved Colossian church gave them assurances of their relationship to Christ. He told them of what Christ had done for
them. He reminded them of how they had reacted to Christ's love and he now counsels them with regard to their ongoing response to God's grace.
We need to stop and review these matters for ourselves or we will be overwhelmed by the cares of this life and the assaults or our enemy.
I. What Christ Has Done For Us. A. He reconciled us to God. Col. 1:20-22 B. He canceled the debt to the law. Col. 2: 13, 14
C. He defeated our enemy. Col 2:15
II. How We Have Responded to His Love. A. We have received Christ as Lord. Col 2:6 (Rom. 10:9-10)
B. We died with Him and were buried with Him. Col. 2:20 and 12 C. We were raised with Him and He is our life. Col 3:1-4
III. What We Must Do To Enjoy These Things. A. We must think God's thoughts. Col. 3:2; Phil. 4:8, 9
B. We must give permission for Christ to work. Col.3:15 C. We must let His word live in us RICHLY! Col 3:16; Rom. 10:17; Heb. 4:12; Mat. 24:35
Our response to God is extremely important. Not that we would offend God or that we would hurt His feelings (in a human sense) but that we need to know for
ourselves that we are responding correctly. God is the source of our life. He is the source of our salvation. We have become His people by faith in Him and He wishes us to be at rest in our relation to Him and to
others.
Knowing How We Know 081300
Hebrews 11:1-6
John said upon believing that Jesus is the Christ we are able to know that we have eternal life. Yet, there is something more basic than that which is the
need to know God is. C. S. Lewis who had been raised without God and taught to be a skeptic said he had to come to believe in God and only then could he be 'converted' to Christ. This is precisely what the writer of
Hebrews assures us.
I. Faith is the Evidence. A. Not based on the world's myths. B. Based on a simple statement. Genesis 1:1
C. Based on our reasonable observations. Psalm 19:1-4
II. We must Believe God is. A. God asserts He exists and He is alone. Isa. 45:18-22 B. Throughout the Bible it is affirmed that our God is the True God.
1. The gods of Egypt fell before Him. Exodus 2. The gods of Canaan fell before Him. 1 Sam. 5 C. In History our God has been proven to be God.
1. The gods of Rome fell before Him. 2. The gods of all the world have fallen before Him.
III. We must believe He rewards those who earnestly seek Him. A. He said if we would seek we would find. Deut 4:29; Jer. 29:13; Psalm 8:17; Matthew 7:7
B. He said He would make us His children. John 1:12, 13 C. He said He would give us the greatest reward. Luke 12:32; 1 Peter 1:1-9
We place our faith in many things we cannot prove in a concrete manner. Look at our money system and our system of government. Faith based on experience and
on testimony of others. Not at all unlike the faith we have in God. As we apply the faith God has given us, He meets us at the point of our needs and He delivers us. Praise to His name.
Knowing That We Know 080500
1 John 5:1-13
John writes as an elderly pastor who is deeply concerned about the condition of the faith of his people. He is especially concerned that they not be doubtful
as to their condition in the presence of God. We certainly are not to be confidant because we have joined the church or because we have, at some time in the past, prayed a prayer asking for salvation. We must know
because of the testimony in our heart.
I. This is God's Testimony, not man's. A. The Bible can be trusted - it is from God. 2 Tim. 3:14-17
B. The Bible is not subject to man's opinions. 2 Peter 1:19-21 C. This testimony has been proven in all ages and all cultures.
II. God Has Given Us Eternal Life. A. He has allowed us to be born of God. John 1:10-13 B. He has given us of His divine nature. 2 Peter 1:3, 4
C. This Eternal Life is Jesus. John 17:2, 3; 1 John 5:20
III. We May Know That We Have That Eternal Life. A. The Bible is given so we may believe. John 20:29-31
B. The Spirit is given so we may believe. Rom. 8:5-11; 1 John 3:21-24 C. We can have confidence to enter God's presence. Heb. 4:14-16
Our confidence does not rest on a feeling. It must first rest on the living and powerful written word of the Living God. Then and only then can it rest on our
awareness of the Holy Spirit within us. It is never a matter of our conscience. Our confidence and peace in relation to our salvation must come from God. God is true and all men (and demonic forces) are not to be
trusted in matters of faith. Our faith is in God - not in a church, not in a human leader, not in our family connections - in God alone. Keeping that central to our thinking allows us to rest in matters of faith.
The Blessing of Love 072300
Romans 12:9-21
As Paul the Apostle comes to the end of his description of the "different gifts, according to the grace given us" he turns to "the greatest of
these" - Love! To be able to love is the greatest gift of God. Our ability to love grows out of God's love for us. It is implanted in all people but only fully released when we submit to the Lordship of Jesus
Christ. His Spirit in ours enables us to release fully His kind of love.
I. Christ's Love Must be the Driving Force of our Lives. 2 Cor. 5:14 A. His Love protects us. Romans 8:33-39
B. His love is active and positive. 1 Cor. 13:4-6 C. His love binds other virtues together. Col. 3:14
II. Christ's Love Enables us. 2 Timothy 1:7 A. We are enabled to lay aside our worldly wisdom. 1 Cor. 8:1, 2
B. We are enabled to have courage. 1John 4:16-18 C. We are enabled to love others. 1John 4:19-21
III. Our Love, as a Reflection of His, Must be Like His. 2 Cor. 13:11-14 A. A love that is self-sacrificing. Eph. 5:1, 2
B. A love that is not self centered. Phil. 2:1-11 C. A love that hides sin rather than spreads it. 1 Peter 4:7-11 1. He hides our sin in His own body, and remembers it no more
2. We must be like Him in that attitude.
Galatians 5:6 states, "The only thing that counts is faith, expressing itself through love." NIV. According to Jesus, the only evidence that we are
His disciples is that we love one another. Many times we fail in love because we are so zealous for a particular cause we forget that it only counts if we express it in love. We need the same attitude that was in
Christ Jesus. We must never rejoice in the failures of others or keep a record of their wrongs. We must cover with a cloak of silence the sins of others, once they have been covered with the blood of Jesus. May God
so strengthen us to such love.
Spiritual Blessings for God's People 071600
Hebrews 11: 30-40
When we do think of God blessing us we think in terms of 'warm fuzzy' things. Good times, good feelings, plans which work. Love, Joy, Peace ... and on and on.
We think of the kind of things represented in most of Hebrews chapter eleven. Most people skip lightly over the last few verses and quickly latch onto, "God had planned something better for us....." . Then
we thank God we live under Grace and no longer have to go through the tough times. Which leaves us confused because they keep coming back. Hmmm...
I. Many Have Been Remarkably Blessed. "By Faith" A. Living by faith and rewarded. (C. T. Studd, Hudson Taylor, etc)
B. Moving from victory to victory - faith to faith. C. Walking in obvious power. (Billy Graham)
II. Some Fall Into the "Others" Category. Still "By Faith" A. Struggling with 'circumstances'.
B. Struggling with nervous problems. (William Cowper) C. Never seeing the product of faithful work.
III. God Has a Plan For Dealing With Either. Heb. 12 A. Remember those who have been used of God. B. Be clean before God accepting His discipline.
C. Run the race with perseverance.
If we resist the discipline of the Lord and fail to grow in the bad times as well as the good times we will allow all kinds of difficulty to rise in our
lives. God disciplines us for our good. If we do not stop and consider we will miss God's grace in the midst of our difficulties. We will let a root of bitterness rise in us and many (ourselves included) will be
defiled and even destroyed. No matter the circumstance "we have come to Mount Zion, to the Heavenly Jerusalem, the City of the Living God." ... "Let us be thankful and so worship God acceptably with
reverence and awe, for our God is a consuming fire." Hallelujah.
Every Spiritual Blessing 070900
Ephesians 1:1-14
To think that God blesses us with every spiritual blessing is much more than most Christians will accept. Since the scripture qualifies the promise with
"in the heavenly realms" many assume that those blessings await us in heaven. Well, lets see what the text will tell us.
I. He Chose US A. Before the creation. 2 Thess. 2:13-15 B. To be holy and blameless. Col. 1:21-23 C. According to His plan, not ours. Heb. 6:13-20
II. He Predestined US A. To be Adopted as sons. John 1:12, 13 B. To be Like His Son. Rom. 8:29 C. To be For The Praise of His Glory.
III. He Redeemed US A. Bought us back from sin by His Own Blood. 1 Peter 1:18-21 B. He sealed us with His Holy Spirit.
(Like a seal on a medicine container) C. He guarantees us our Inheritance. 1 Thess 5:23, 24
You see, though we will be blessed in heaven, our blessings in heaven are ours now. The greatest being our inheritance in Christ Jesus. We are blessed with
being God's children. We are blessed with the life of God living in us. We are blessed with the knowledge of His will. WE ARE BLESSED. And this blessing is for here and now and is more than we ever will imagine.
Receive that blessing and live in it.
The Fruit of the Spirit 070200
Galatians 5:22-26
This passage reminds us of truths we must come back to again and again in order to maintain a stable and spiritually profitable lifestyle. God has enabled us
-- we must use our ability. This is the path of life in Christ.
I. We have crucified the flesh. (Not: 'we should') A. The 'flesh' is natural to unbelievers. B. The 'flesh' is what our habits call out for. Romans 7:4-6
C. The 'flesh' is dead in Jesus Christ. (a matter of faith) Col 2:13
II. The Spirit fruit is present in our lives. A. With our new life came a new nature. 2 Cor 5:17; Gal. 6:15
B. The presence of the Spirit is empowering. Romans 15:13 C. The fruit is dormant unless cultivated. Luke 13:6-9
III. Living by the Spirit calls for our keeping 'in step'. A. Nothing will happen without our choosing.
B. We must 'put off the old' and 'put on the new' personally. Col 3:8-14 C. Walking in the Spirit is the way we frustrate the 'flesh'. Gal. 5:16
Our old habits, or nature, cry out to us to fall back into past patterns of thought or behavior. The Spirit of God within us calls out to allow His fruit to
become ripe and be free to show itself through us. We are in the position of choice every day. How will we live? We are able to either live in victory or in defeat. We must choose victory for our own good and that
of our family, friends and community.
